A lake big enough to change how service works

Lake Winnipesaukee covers about 71 square miles including Paugus Bay, runs roughly 21 miles north-west to south-east, is between one and nine miles wide, reaches 180 feet deep and holds at least 264 islands. It sits 504 feet above sea level, and eight towns front it.

Those numbers are the whole argument for a mobile marine mechanic. A boat that will not start at a dock in Moultonborough is not a short tow from a shop in Mirror Lake, and three of Moultonborough's public accesses are restricted to town residents holding a parking pass, so trailering out is not always even an option. On a lake this shape, the mechanic travelling beats the boat travelling almost every time.

Wolfeboro, NH

On the south-eastern shore and the closest sizeable town to Mirror Lake. Public access at the Wolfeboro Town Docks and Boat Ramp, with Goodhue & Hawkins Navy Yard also on the water here.

Tuftonboro, NH

Home ground. Mirror Lake is an unincorporated village in the town of Tuftonboro, in Carroll County, sitting between Mirror Lake itself and Lake Winnipesaukee. Melvin Village is the other village on this stretch of shore.

Moultonborough, NH

The long northern shore. Lees Mills Landing, States Landing and the Long Island access are all here — and all three are restricted to town residents with a parking pass, which is exactly why a mechanic who comes to the boat is worth knowing.

Meredith, NH

The north-western corner. Meredith Public Docks are free to town taxpayers and residents with a decal and charge everyone else, and Goodhue Boat Company keeps a private launch here.

Center Harbor, NH

Between Meredith and Moultonborough at the top of the lake, with public access at the Center Harbor Town Docks. One of the five ports the MS Mount Washington has to reach before ice-out can be declared.

Laconia, NH

The western shore, including Weirs Beach and Paugus Bay. The busiest water on the lake in July and August, and the place where a cooling fault picked up idling in traffic gets found the hard way.

Gilford, NH

South-west of Laconia, with Fay’s Boat Yard on the shore here. Governors Island and the Gilford shoreline sit right on the main body of the lake.

Alton, NH

The southern tip. Downing’s Landing at Alton Bay is the only state-managed public boat access ramp on Lake Winnipesaukee, with West Alton Marina offering public launching around the clock for a daily fee and Roberts Cove Basin charging as well.

The season is bracketed by ice, not by a calendar

Ice-out on Winnipesaukee is an actual declaration, not a feeling. It is called when the MS Mount Washington could reach all five of its ports — Center Harbor, Wolfeboro, Alton, Weirs Beach and Meredith — and a spotter makes the call from the air. The record runs back to 1888. The earliest ice-out ever recorded is 17 March 2024; the latest is 12 May 1888. In 2026 it was declared on 13 April.

The far end of the season is softer. The MS Mount Washington runs from late May into late October, and marinas on the lake take boats out on their own schedules rather than a common date. In practice the winterization queue fills from late September, and the boats that get a choice of date are the ones booked before it does.
