Before you call
- Do you come to the boat, or does the boat come to you?
- Both, and the first phone call decides which. Diagnostics, electrics, water pumps, fuel problems, batteries and charging, trim and tilt and seasonal work are all normally done at the boat. Powerhead and lower unit rebuilds, structural fibreglass and anything needing the hull dry are shop jobs.
- Which engine brands do you work on?
- Mercury, Yamaha, Volvo Penta, Suzuki and Sea-Doo — outboards, sterndrives and personal watercraft. Those are the brands in regular circulation on Lake Winnipesaukee.
- How much will it cost?
- You get a price before any work starts, broken into parts and labour, and the job begins when you approve it. What this site will not do is publish a number for a job nobody has looked at yet — a made-up range is worse than no range.
- What do you need to know when I call?
- Where the boat is, what the boat and engine are, what it is doing, whether it does it cold or hot, and what was done to it last. Those five answers decide what comes in the van and often narrow the fault before anyone arrives.
- My boat will not start at the dock. What should I check first?
- Battery switch on, kill lanyard in place, battery terminals tight and clean. If the engine turns over but will not fire, stop cranking — repeated cranking on a flooded engine causes its own damage. Then call and describe exactly what it does.
- My temperature alarm went off once and then stopped. Is that fine?
- No. Treat it as a fault until it has been checked. An overheat alarm that clears itself usually means flow was restored, not that flow was never a problem, and the second event is the one that costs money.
- When should I book winterization?
- From September. The last two weeks before the first hard freeze are the busiest of the entire year, and that is exactly the window in which a missed booking becomes a cracked block.
- When can spring work start?
- Well before the ice goes. A boat on its trailer or on stands can be commissioned in the yard, which is how you end up first in the water rather than tenth in the queue. Ice-out in 2026 was declared on 13 April.
- Can you work on an older boat?
- Yes. Older boats are often easier to diagnose and harder to source parts for, so the honest part of that conversation is availability rather than capability.
- Do you handle a breakdown out on the water?
- Dockside and on-trailer work, yes. A boat adrift on the lake needs a tow service first — get the boat to a dock safely, then call about the repair.
