Noises that change with steering or gear
A rumble or growl that gets louder as you turn the wheel, or that appears when you put the drive in gear and goes quiet in neutral, is pointing at the driveline between engine and drive. On a sterndrive the usual suspects are the gimbal bearing, the universal joints in the drive shaft, or the engine coupler. The giveaway is that the noise tracks steering angle or gear engagement rather than engine speed. It is not an ignore-it noise, because a failing gimbal bearing takes the drive shaft and the bellows with it.
Treat it as get-home urgency rather than shut-down-now urgency. Run gently, avoid hard turns at speed, and get the drive pulled and inspected before the next outing. If the growl comes with any water in the bilge under the engine, stop using the boat: a failed bellows behind a failed bearing is how boats sink at the mooring. Shift, gear and drive noises
A grinding or heavy clunk on shift engagement usually means the shift mechanism is not moving cleanly through its travel. Cable adjustment is the first thing to check, because a cable out of adjustment leaves the clutch dog partly engaged and chews its edges every time you shift. Worn clutch dogs then add the further symptom of the drive popping out of gear under load. Both are lower-unit territory and covered in detail elsewhere; the point here is that a rough shift is a problem now and a dead gearcase later.
A whine that rises smoothly with engine speed is different. If it changes with revs regardless of gear, it is usually engine-mounted: an alternator or belt-driven accessory, a bearing in a pulley, or on supercharged engines the blower itself. If the whine only appears in gear and changes with boat speed, it is gear noise inside the drive. Some gear whine is normal in reverse and at certain speeds, but a whine that has newly appeared, or that is getting louder through the season, needs a gear-oil inspection and a look.
Vibration that appears at speed
Vibration that only shows up above a particular speed, and stays smooth below it, is almost always rotating mass: the propeller, the shaft or the drive. A nicked or bent blade, a spun rubber hub, a bent shaft or a propeller that is out of balance all produce exactly this signature. The first check is the simplest one: put the boat on the trailer and look at the prop properly, including the leading edges and the hub. Propeller work has its own page and is not repeated here.
Do not run a vibration out. Vibration at speed loads bearings and seals that were never designed to take it, and a small imbalance turns into a gearcase bearing failure over a season. If a vibration appears mid-outing, back the speed off until it goes away and run home below it. On this lake a good proportion of speed vibrations start with a rock or a sandbar near shore, particularly around the narrow passages and island channels where the depth changes fast.
Knocks, squeals and rattles
A knock that appears under load and goes away at idle is the one to take most seriously. It can be detonation from poor or stale fuel, wrong ignition timing, or an overheating condition, and it can equally be a bearing on its way out. Detonation damages pistons quickly. A bearing knock ends the engine. Either way the correct response is to reduce load immediately, return at low speed, and not run the engine again until it has been diagnosed. This is the one noise where carrying on costs the most.
A squeal on startup that fades after a few seconds is usually a belt slipping on a cold, damp morning, and it is largely benign until it stops fading, at which point the belt or its tensioner needs attention. A rattle at idle that clears with revs is often an exhaust heat shield, a loose cowling latch, a bracket, or a mount that has worked loose. Benign in itself, but a loose mount is worth finding. Track down a rattle while it is still a rattle rather than after it becomes a broken component.
Alarms, cooling and the general rule
An alarm is not a noise to interpret, it is an instruction. An overheat or low-oil-pressure warning means shut down, not slow down, and it means it immediately regardless of how healthy the engine sounds. Cooling problems tend to announce themselves through the alarm and the telltale stream rather than through mechanical noise, and they have their own page here covering impellers, thermostats and the rest. If an alarm sounds and the cause is not instantly obvious, the engine stops and the boat gets towed.
The general rule is worth more than the index above it. A new noise is information the boat is giving you for free, and the cheapest possible moment to investigate one is the first time you hear it. Noises rarely go away; they get louder and they take something else with them. On a short New England season a failure in July costs the summer, whereas the same fault caught as an odd sound on the first run after ice-out is usually a small job.
